Søndermarksvej

In the Copenhagen neighbourhood of Valby – lies this gem of a villa apartment. To one side it has a calming view of Søndermarken’s greenery and on the other the rooftops of Valby. The apartment has undergone a complete renovation, where all the walls have been torn down, making space for a new open floor plan with an adjacent living room and kitchen.

The kitchen island has become a piece of furniture that also looks great when viewed from the living room.

The owners of the apartment are both architects by occupation, which is evident throughout the design – it’s clear that they have thought of every detail. In terms of the kitchen, they also had a clear vision of how it should look, and which functions it should inhabit. Our kitchen design went hand in hand with their aesthetics and love of quality materials, and together we created the kitchen of their dreams.

Against the wall, the functional part of the kitchen is located, with hotplates, sink, integrated fridge and dishwasher. As a natural choice for this part of the kitchen, the worktop is made of stainless steel – a material that is both practical and which gains a beautiful patina over time. The back wall is painted in the same black hue as the charcoal linoleum on the kitchen fronts. It gives a nice, slightly dramatic look that balances well with the light surfaces of the wooden floor and window areas. In the wall, a custom-designed built-in cabinet with an oak front breaks up the dark surface. This used to be a niche in the room, which we now have fully utilized with our custom-designed solution. The cabinet is designed with integrated electrical outlet, which gives the possibility to store away kitchen appliances, such as coffee machine, toaster and the like. The simple, clean look of the kitchen can thus easily be preserved, without compromising the daily routines and use of the kitchen.

Opposite the kitchen wall is a large elongated kitchen island consisting of cupboards and drawer units – also with fronts in charcoal linoleum. With its combination of drawers and cabinets, the design elements were carefully selected based on the specific needs of the family. The worktop of the kitchen island is a pietra grey marble, which creates a nice contrast to the raw steel on the other worktop. The beautifully bevelled edge gives an airy look to the otherwise heavy marble slab. The result is an almost sculptural kitchen island, which presents itself more like a piece of furniture than a kitchen, elegantly uniting the zones of the kitchen with the living room space.
